You've Got the What. The How Feels Impossible.
When you have a dream or a big life goal, the end image you envision seems too far off from where you are now. Let's say you dream of becoming a rocket scientist who gets to work on SpaceX missions. It seems just too far off and too unattainable. Or imagine you are an accountant in the Midwest but you dream of becoming a movie star. You can see the image in your mind's eye, but in reality, you have no idea who to call or what the first step would be to get into that completely foreign world.
The good thing is that you are dreaming. And dreaming big. You should, because each of us only has one life here on Earth.
So you've got the WHAT in your head. But the HOW of how to get there seems too complicated. Too far. Too foreign. Too much.
Well, here is the thing. Getting your dream in motion is not rocket science. Even if you want to become a rocket scientist.
There Was a Day Elon Knew Nothing About Rockets
Elon Musk is not a rocket scientist. He is a guy who built rockets that fly. And there was a day, a specific unremarkable day somewhere in the past, where Elon Musk knew nothing about rockets. Not a single thing.
And then he learned the first thing. And then he learned the second thing. And then he partnered with people who knew far more than he did. He connected dots. He flew to other countries. He talked to governments. He gathered information. He had an idea and explored it. He had another idea. Tried it a different way. One approach failed. Another literally blew up in his face.
And eventually he built a business in rocket science.
There was no moment where he woke up already knowing how to do it. There was just a sequence of first steps, each one tethered to the next, daisy chaining forward into an outcome that looked impossible from the start.
Everything that has ever been done is done through some sort of first step, and a second step, and a third step. Even rocket science.
You Do Not Have to Be the Expert to Start
Here is the thing most people do not realize. You do not have to have any credentials to take the first step toward the thing you want. You just have to be honest about where you are and willing to ask a simple question.
Say you are a hairdresser. Your whole income comes from hairdressing. You have a mortgage. Everything is in motion. And you want to become a PhD in a specific area of research. You think: I could never be that. I am not an expert. I would not even know how to apply.
But someone somewhere has done exactly that before. And it was not rocket science. They took the first step and the next step and those steps daisy chained into the end game.
The first step is not enrolling in a PhD program. The first step might be walking into a university center and finding a human being and saying:
I am a big dummy. I am clueless about this. But I simply know that I want this. Can you help me with the one next step?
That is all. Say those words to a person. And then you start to get clarity on the path, on the barriers, on the requirements, on the credentials and the tasks. And you start marching down that path, opening the door to a completely new life.
The Life Hack: Always Tether to the Next Step
Here is the core mechanic that makes any first step actually work. When you take the action, you immediately tether it to the next one. You never let the chain break.
Say you call a realtor to explore what it would mean to sell your place and go do something completely different. Great first step. But when the conversation ends, you do not just hang up and wait to feel inspired again. You say:
- Can we meet again in one week?
- Can you send me some examples of what I might be buying?
- I will send you my comparables for the current place.
- These are the kinds of things I am looking for.
You put a real thing on the calendar. You create a mutual exchange with a next action built in. The chain does not break. And that unbroken chain is how a fuzzy craving becomes a real life.
The moment you let the chain break, the dream goes back into the drawer where it has been living for years. Not because you are weak or uncommitted. Because chains that have no next link get cold fast. The tether is the whole game.
Give Your Craving Credence Today, Not Someday
Here is how I want you to think about this from today forward.
When you see a desire pop through your head, when you feel the craving for a different career, a different relationship, a different city, a different life, give it credence. Give it attention. Give it action. Not someday. Today.
Say: today I am going to Google that person, message that contact, schedule the call, send the email. I am going to make it real with one action today.
No matter how tiny the action is, it has to be concrete and real and happening in the actual world. Ideas that stay inside your head are not steps. They are wishes. The moment an idea touches the real world, it becomes a step. And a step tethered to the next step becomes a path.
This Is What KindEdge Was Built to Do
I built KindEdge because I kept getting inspired by books, by retreats, by other people's stories. And then I kept getting hijacked by real life the moment I tried to move toward big change. I was inspired and stuck. Inspired and stuck. Again and again.
What I discovered is that what I needed was not more inspiration. It was the same kind of structured change management process I deliver to large global organizations navigating complex transformation. Clear steps. Real-world tasks. Decisions tools. A system that survives Monday.
There is always a real-world, concrete, doable task you can do today to get you started. It simply requires a good foundation to help you turn the many unknowns into actionable steps. This is what we do in the KindEdge Steps. We take a fuzzy dream, give it clarity, and then build a network of people and tools to help you get the Project of You in motion.
It is always doable. And it always starts with just one thing.
Your First Step Is Waiting Right Now
The hardest and most important step is always Step 1. Not because it is technically difficult. Because it is the step that makes the dream real instead of theoretical. It is the step that proves to your nervous system that this is actually happening.
So try this now. Download the free Step 1 Preview below, read the instructions, and begin to take the actions described in the worksheet. The full KindEdge Steps program has 20 steps that keep you in motion and making daily progress. But this is where it starts.
By tomorrow you will already be basking in the glow of real progress. Not imagined progress. Not inspired-and-stuck progress. Real, tethered, one-step-forward progress.
It is not going to be easy. But it is going to be fun.
